Veneers are thin shells designed to cover the front of the teeth. At Grant Family Dentistry, they are custom-made for each patient and bonded to the tooth with a dental bonding agent for a long-lasting, durable solution. The veneers are made from porcelain or resin to provide a natural-looking, attractive appearance. They can cover chipped, worn, discolored, misshapen, or misaligned teeth. The result is a beautiful new look for the patient!
Patients often choose porcelain veneers because they resist staining better than other materials. Another advantage of porcelain veneers is that they mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural teeth. Resin veneers are thinner and require less tooth surface preparation before placement. Resin is less expensive than porcelain, which is another consideration for many patients.
Before placing veneers on your teeth, our dentist must prepare the teeth by removing a small portion of the enamel. This is necessary to ensure the veneers fit properly and are not too bulky. Then, an impression of your teeth will be taken and sent to a professional laboratory where your custom veneers will be made. Once your veneers are ready, our dentist will schedule you for a second appointment to place them. Temporary veneers can be placed on the teeth until the custom ones are ready.
During your placement visit, the dentist will apply special cement to the teeth and place the veneers on top. A special light is used to harden the cement and secure the veneers. The dentist will ensure the veneers fit and look properly before cementing them. Once we ensure the fit and color are perfect, you’ll be ready to flash your new smile.
Because veneers are stain-resistant, they do not become discolored by coffee, tea, wine, or cigarettes. Additionally, they are more natural-looking than crowns because less of the tooth needs to be altered to place the veneer. The porcelain used to create veneers is also translucent and reflects light similarly to natural enamel.
Veneers do not need to be removed for cleaning. Simply brush your teeth like you normally would to keep them clean. Veneers do not require any special care beyond regular brushing and flossing. If cared for properly, they can last for many years.
